วางใจ (Wang-Jai) — Freedom Without Compromise
FatFIRE Path
What is it?
FatFIRE is financial independence without lifestyle compromise. You retire early, but your retirement looks like a premium life: a nice condo in Bangkok or abroad, private health insurance, international travel every year, dining out regularly, and no anxiety about money.
The FatFIRE target in Thailand: annual expenses ฿1,200,000–฿2,400,000/year (฿100,000–฿200,000/month). Your FIRE Number is correspondingly larger: ฿30M–฿60M.
Who is this for?
You want independence and quality of life, not one at the expense of the other. You earn significantly above the Bangkok median and you are willing to save aggressively for 15–20 years.
- You earn ฿150,000+/month and have genuine capacity to invest ฿60,000–฿100,000/month
- You are unwilling to reduce lifestyle in retirement compared to your working years
- You have 20+ years to compound your investments
- You value flexibility and security — private hospitals, business class travel, a nice home without worry
How it works
Saves 40–50% of high income · Diversified Thai + global equities · 3–3.5% withdrawal rate · Target ฿30M–฿60M
Khun Chai, 35, earns ฿200,000/month. He saves ฿80,000/month after expenses and parental support. At 8% average return, he reaches ฿40M in approximately 18 years — retiring at 53. His annual withdrawal at 3.5% is ฿1,400,000 (฿116,000/month) — Premium retirement in Bangkok.
The trade-offs
What you gain
- Full lifestyle without compromise in retirement
- Private healthcare — you will never queue at a government hospital
- A large safety buffer — market corrections do not threaten your basic security
- The status and peace of mind of significant wealth
What you give up
- You need to earn significantly above average — this path is not accessible to everyone
- Even with high income, 15–20 years of aggressive saving requires genuine discipline
- Higher income often means a more demanding job during the accumulation phase
- A larger portfolio is a more complex thing to manage in retirement
Thai-specific considerations
FatFIRE in Bangkok is realistic for executives, doctors, lawyers, and successful business owners. If your income is ฿60,000–฿100,000/month, FatFIRE is not your path — standard FIRE may give you a Premium lifestyle with a smaller number.
Bangkok property as part of FatFIRE. If your condo is worth ฿8M and paid off, that is equity you could sell and invest, or live in rent-free in retirement — both scenarios meaningfully affect your FIRE Number.
International health insurance becomes essential at FatFIRE. Budget ฿15,000–฿25,000/month for comprehensive private health insurance.
Getting started
- Calculate your real monthly retirement spending — be honest, include travel, healthcare, and lifestyle
- Multiply annual spending by 25–33 to get your FIRE Number (use 33 for a 40+ year retirement)
- Calculate how much you need to invest monthly to reach that number in your target timeframe
- If the monthly investment required feels impossible, revisit either the timeline or the target
- Maximise RMF/SSF every year — the tax refund at a high income bracket is substantial
